Mushroom Gill Spacing
The spacing between the gills (lamellae) is a defining characteristic when identifying a mushroom. Sometimes the gills are not straight and equal, so observe any unique formations. They may appear to be maze-like, forked, veined, etc.
Also, examine the color of the gills and take a spore print to aid in identification.
